Vascular and Leg Vein Treatment
Spider veins begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles. They are small red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles. It's estimated that at least one third of the adult female population is troubled with this common problem. People often seek treatment for spider veins because of cosmetic concern. However, it is also common for spider veins to cause symptoms, such as aching, heaviness, itching and night cramps.
Spider veins may be isolated or associated with "feeder" veins. They can also be associated with larger underlying varicose veins.
Spider veins usually take on one of three forms:
- They may appear in a spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point.
- They may appear in a pattern that resembles branches on a tree
- They may be in a linear pattern that appear as thin separate lines.
Certain factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy, hormonal factors, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and trauma.
Spider Veins Treatment
Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins
A common form of treatment for spider veins is sclerotherapy. This is an in-office procedure where veins are injected with a solution, using small needles, which causes them to collapse and fade from view. The procedure typically improves not only the cosmetic appearance but associated symptoms as well. A few sessions may be required to obtain maximum benefit. During sclerotherapy, the affected leg is elevated to drain blood, and the sclerosant is injected into the spider vein. The procedure normally takes 5 to 30 minutes, depending on how many spider veins are treated. This form of spider vein treatment may be painful, and the chemical (sclerosant) that is injected can cause a feeling of burning or cramping for a few minutes in the area where the shot was given. You may need repeated sessions and many injections per session depending on the extent of the spider veins and type of sclerosant used.
Laser Treatment for Spider Veins
Lasers may also be used to treat spider veins. During laser treatment intense light is directed to the veins, eliminating them permanently. Lasers are especially suited to treat small spider veins when a needle cannot be used.
Bruising usually occurs in the area treated after laser treatments and lasts for a few weeks. The cost of laser treatment for spider veins is usually higher compared to sclerotherapy.
Acne Treatments
Acne is very common and medically classified as a skin disease. Acne is a disorder that causes outbreaks of skin lesions commonly called pimples. They are caused by excessive secretion of oily substance called the sebum by sebaceous glands.
Acne which usually occurs in adolescence due to hormonal changes can also occur in adults. The sebaceous gland along with the hair follicle glands become plugged with the excess sebaceous oils and the normal skin cell turnover. In addition the normal skin bacteria called P acnes begins to multiply and can cause irritation and inflammation in the plugged up sebaceous and hair follicle glands.
Mild Acne
Can best be treated with gently washing the affected skin glands with warm water and soap twice a day in order to remove (exfoliate) the dead skin cells and excessive oil.
Occasional a topical over the counter acne treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be used to help with the inflammation and exfoliation.
Moderate Acne
Can best be treated with removal of the plugs of excessive oil and dead skin cells (comedones) topical antibiotics, retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives), oral antibiotics and in females the use oral contraceptives.
A combination with IPL (intense pulsed laser) with the above therapies has also increased their effectiveness.
Severe Acne
Can best be treated with the above method of treatments and can also include surgical incision of large comedones and occasional injection of steroids within the lesions themselves. The use of isotretinon a synthetic man made retinoid has been effective in controlling the acne producing process. However this effective drug has serious side effects. The use of IPL (photofacial) along with the above treatments has shown to possibly increase their effectiveness.

Effective treatments:
Laser resurfacing uses high-energy light to burn away damaged skin. Laser resurfacing may be used to minimize fine scars
Deep chemical peels use a chemical solution to gently burn away, in a controlled fashion, the fine outer layers of the skin. Healing of the skin tissue can take from 3 days to 2 weeks. A new, smoother layer of skin is then formed.
Microdermabrasion may be used to minimize small scars, minor skin surface irregularities, surgical scars, and acne scars. As the name implies, dermabrasion involves removing the top layers of skin with an electrical machine that "abrades" the skin. As the skin heals from the procedure, the surface appears smoother and fresher.
BOTOX®

Birthmark Removal
A number of different types of birthmarks are known that include, but are not limited to, stork bites, Mongolian blue spots, strawberry marks, cafe au lait spots, congenital melanocytic nevi, and port-wine stains.
Hemangiomas are strawberry colored "birthmarks". They are not rare, and vary from tiny to large and multiple tumor-like growths. They are not true birthmarks since they are mostly not seen at birth, but start in infancy and then begin to grow. Hemangiomas first appear from birth up to 18 months, and then slowly shrink.
There are several techniques for birthmark removal. The most effective method for removing a birthmark is dependent on type, location, age, and other factors. Dr. Chapman can examine the birthmark or scar and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

What is a Blepharoplasty?
As we age the skin around the eyes especially the eyelids becomes looser and saggy and the fat especially around the lower eyelids starts to protrude giving us that tired and baggy appearance. Blepharoplasty can have a dramatic effect on your eyelids, restoring a brighter, more rested appearance. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure done under local anesthesia that eliminates the loose baggy skin in the upper and lower lids as well as the bulging fat under the eyes. Sometimes only the redundant skin of the upper eyelid is needed to be removed, sometimes just a little of the bulging fat under the eyes needs to be removed. Sometimes more needs to be done. Am I a candidate for a Blepharoplasty?
Any one is a candidate for blepharoplasty if they feel they need cosmetic enhancement around the eyes. The removal of excess skin and fat can make a dramatic difference in
the youthful appearance of the face and eyes. A patient usually over the age of 30 can be a candidate as long as they are in generally good health.
What is the procedure?
Under sterile procedure a local injection of anesthesia is given. The area of excess skin and fat bags is marked and incisions are made. The loose skin and fat bags are removed and fine sutures are used to close the small wound areas. These sutures will remain for several days and then be removed.
What can I expect after the procedure?
There can be swelling, bruising and redness around the eyes after the procedure. With the use of ice this will start to subside within 24 hours although bruising may take longer to be eliminated. There will be minimal pain which can be controlled with pain relief (ask your doctor). Some patients may feel a sandy or gritty feeling in their eyes which is normal after this procedure and can be eliminated with the use of artificial tears.
However, the recovery period is different for every individual.
